I just got a ridiculously good price on a pair of short TORS, so I couldn't resist. I have come to enjoy the way they look on the bike, but not sure I'll prefer the sound to my punched stockers. So how long am I in for to put them on (I'm pretty fair with a wrench)? And more importantly, how long to swap them back if I miss the sound of my current pipes?

5-10 min per side.

Heat shield bolts - allen key, 2 per side
Exhaust clamp - either 12 or 14mm socket or wrench. 1 per side
Exhaust mount - I think it was a 14mm. 1 per side.

The heat shield for the stock long don't "like" the shorties. I got mine to mount up, but when I took off the left pipe to do new rear pads, I noticed that the heat shield gouged the muffler chrome a bit. But it covers it back up when re-fitted.

Worst case is you need new heat shields for the shorties.

It should not take anymore than 30 min.
I put a set of hog slayers on my storm in less than an hr and I had to remove the cat as well.

Excellent, thank you. That's what I was hoping for. Worth a try then, for sure

I have had my exhaust off four times now and I would say I could do it in 30 min or less. First time in I would leave one hour. 5 MM allen wrench on the heat shield, 12 MM on the exhaust clamps two per side, 12 MM on the bolt that holds the exhaust to the frame, 12 MM wrench to stop the nut from turning as this is a bolt with a lock nut on the back side. Be careful not to damage the exhaust gaskets they are on the inside of the muffler pipe that attaches to the header pipe.

Thanks for the tips! All tools I have ready to hand, so sounds like a piece of cake.

Here is another. When you have the pipes off all the sump bolts can be accessed.

The are suppose to be 12 nm.....I think....best look it up. But, when I checked mine
they were all set at 5 nm from the factory. Use a cross bolt tightening pattern of course.

The service manual mentions that the dealer is supposed to reset an unlisted group of torques
after the first 500 miles. Do they? Hell no.

Fishy, will do. I've been really happy with the sound of my punched stockers, but I realized that the shorties will go better visually with the look I'm heading towards. Have to see where the balance lands between audio aesthetics and visual aesthetics.

DizzE, excellent advice, thank you. I'll rtfm for the torque value and check that will I'm lying there. Thanks!
